My client, a subject matter expert with a powerful, advocacy-based vision for training clinical supervisors, was at a crossroads. She needed to create a certification course that not only met rigid state compliance requirements but also embodied her unique, transformative approach to the work. Her powerful vision was trapped without a clear structure, a classic case where brilliant IP needs a dedicated architectural process to be set free.
Her biggest challenge, in her own words, was herself. The brilliant ideas for the course were "floating around in my head," but the frustration of organizing them into a coherent starting point led to avoidance. This was compounded by a core ideological tension: how could she reconcile her groundbreaking, equity-centered insights with the "cookie-cutter" format dictated by state policies, all within a constrained 40-hour training structure?

My role extended far beyond that of a traditional instructional designer. I served as a strategic thought partner, process architect, and collaborative co-dreamer. From our first conversation, I understood the need for a structured, supportive partnership—what I termed a "container" that would provide accountability and a safe space for her vision to take shape.

The Solution & Key Deliverables: Building the Intellectual Property, Then the Course
Instead of forcing the client's vision into a pre-existing compliance box, we built the box around her vision. The solution was a multi-stage design process where each deliverable was built logically upon the last, culminating in a launch-ready course that was both deeply authentic and fully compliant.
We started by establishing a shared understanding of the existing content and the future learner's journey. This foundational document demonstrates how I build trust with clients by deeply understanding their content and anchoring our partnership within their subject matter expertise, ensuring the final product would be deeply relevant and impactful.
Before building the course, we first had to codify her genius. This was the breakthrough. Through our collaborative sessions, we co-created the RISE Framework, a proprietary process model that became the intellectual heartbeat of the entire course. The client noted, "RISE in and of itself helped clarify my own intellectual property because it named my thought process so clearly. The framework helped me 'make it make sense', ultimately contributing to my confidence."
With the RISE Framework as our anchor, we designed the full course structure. We mapped every module, objective, and assessment back to this core IP, and then strategically aligned it with state requirements, transforming compliance from a hurdle into a final checkmark.
